How is rhum agricole different from ordinary rum?
Most rum is distilled from molasses, a by-product of sugar refining. Agricole is distilled from fresh sugarcane juice, pressed and fermented within hours of the cut. The difference is immediate — grassy, mineral and vegetal where molasses rum is sweet and rounded.
What does VSOP mean here?
Under the Martinique appellation it indicates a minimum of four years in oak. Because those years are spent in tropical heat, the spirit develops far faster than it would in a cool climate — this drinks much older than four.
Will a rum drinker like it, or is it too different?
It is genuinely different, which is the point. Anyone who has worked their way through Caribbean and Latin rums and wants something new will find this the most interesting bottle in the category — and it converts whisky drinkers surprisingly often.
