    Midori Melon Liqueur 70cl

    4.8 ★ · 223 Google Reviews
    • Japanese Melon Liqueur · Suntory · Since 1978

Yubari and musk melons — the Japanese fruit sold in wooden presentation boxes — made into a liqueur by Suntory and poured from a frosted green bottle you can identify across a dark room. Midori launched at Studio 54 in 1978 and has never quite stopped being a party.

      The Name
Midori simply means green in Japanese — and the frosted bottle was designed so the colour reads even in a dark room.
      The Fruit
Yubari King and musk melons — the Japanese fruit given as formal gifts in wooden boxes — give the liqueur its sweetness and its perfume.
      1978
Suntory launches it at a party at Studio 54 in New York. It is an immediate fixture of the era, and never entirely leaves.
      1984
A Melbourne bartender combines it with triple sec and lemon and calls it the Japanese Slipper. It is still the best thing to do with the bottle.

      Questions

What does Midori actually taste like?
Ripe honeydew and cantaloupe with a floral, almost perfumed lift — closer to fresh cut melon than to anything artificial. It is sweet, so it wants lemon or soda alongside it rather than being sipped neat.
      Why is it that colour?
Midori means green in Japanese, and the colour was a deliberate design decision from the start — the frosted bottle and the vivid liquid were meant to stand out on a crowded back bar. It has been doing exactly that since 1978.
      What is a Japanese Slipper?
Equal parts Midori, triple sec and fresh lemon juice, shaken hard with ice and strained into a coupe. It was created in Melbourne in the mid-1980s and is still the most elegant thing you can do with the bottle.
Who is this a good gift for?
The person with a sense of humour about their drinks cabinet, anyone who loves Japan, and every host who wants something bright on the shelf. It also makes a very good pair with a Japanese whisky — same house, opposite mood.
Can you deliver it directly to the person I'm gifting?
Yes — enter their address at checkout and add your message. In London it can be at their door within 30–45 minutes, any hour of the day. The recipient must be 18+ with ID for our Challenge 21 check.
