      The Wine

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a Fifth Growth of Pauillac and one of the appellation’s most reliable estates — a house that has never chased fashion. The vineyard sits on the gravel plateau, on deep gravel-sand-clay soils that absorb the day’s heat and release it slowly overnight, which evens out ripening and concentrates the fruit.

2018 is one of the great modern Bordeaux vintages, and it delivered here: ripe, structured, superbly balanced. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant with Merlot and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, aged 16 to 18 months in French oak, around 60–75% new. It sits at 14% ABV. James Suckling 96–97, Decanter 96, Robert Parker 94–96, Wine Spectator 95.

      Questions

Why is 2018 considered a great vintage?

A warm, dry summer following a wet spring gave ripe, concentrated fruit with real structure. It produced wines with both immediate appeal and long ageing potential.

      How does gravel soil help?

Deep gravel drains freely and stores heat, radiating it back to the vines overnight. In Pauillac that is what ripens Cabernet Sauvignon fully in a marginal climate.

      Should I decant it?

Yes if opening now — two hours or more. The tannins are still firm and will benefit from air.
