The Story of Cristal
The Champagne Made for a Tsar
1876
Tsar Alexander II asks Louis Roederer for a champagne of his own. Fearing assassination, he wants a bottle nothing can be hidden in — so it is made of clear crystal, with a flat base instead of the usual deep punt.
Vintage Only
There is no non-vintage Cristal. It is declared only in years the house judges worthy; in a year that falls short, none is released at all.
Estate Grown
Cristal is drawn from Roederer's own Grand Cru parcels rather than bought-in fruit — still unusual in a region where most great houses purchase their grapes.
The 2015
A warm, generous growing season. Riper, rounder fruit than the leaner Cristal vintages, held in line by the chalk minerality the house is built on.

Why is Cristal in a clear bottle?
Because Tsar Alexander II asked for one. He wanted to see what he was drinking, and he wanted a flat-bottomed bottle with no deep punt in which anything could be concealed. Clear glass lets light in, which champagne hates, so the bottle has been wrapped in gold cellophane ever since to keep it out.
Is there a non-vintage Cristal?
No. Cristal is only ever released as a vintage, and only in years the house judges worthy of it. In a year that falls short, no Cristal is made at all — which is why the year on the label carries real weight.
Why a pearl spoon rather than silver?
Metal reacts with the roe and leaves a faint tinny taste. Mother of pearl, bone and horn are inert, which is why caviar has never traditionally been served with a silver spoon. One is included in the box.
How should the caviar be kept before serving?
Straight into the coldest part of the fridge, around 0–4°C, and left unopened until you are ready. Serve the tin nested in ice, and finish it the same day once opened.
Can you deliver it directly to the person I'm gifting?
