What does Nc'nean actually mean?
It is short for Neachneohain — the Gaelic "Queen of Spirits", a figure from Scottish legend who protected nature and went her own way. The distillery took both the name and the attitude, and built something the industry assumed was impossible.
Does organic really change how it tastes?
The bigger influences here are the long fermentation, the mixed yeasts and the red wine casks — those are what give the lemon curd and poached-peach character. Organic barley is a choice about how it is farmed rather than a flavour claim, and the distillery is refreshingly straight about that.
What does "net zero" mean for a distillery?
Nc'nean runs on renewable energy with a biomass boiler burning locally sourced wood chip, and has been verified net zero in its own operations since it started producing. The bottle is 100% recycled glass. No other Scotch distillery started out that way.
