Château Saint-Pierre 2019 — blackcurrant, cedar and cassis from one of Saint-Julien’s smallest and oldest estates.
Saint-Pierre is one of the smaller estates in Saint-Julien, an appellation with a reputation for producing the most consistently balanced reds on the Left Bank — less austere than Pauillac, more structured than Margaux. The 2019 is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, aged in oak barrels.
Full-bodied but never clumsy: dark plum and blackcurrant at the centre, cedar and tobacco around it, and soft tannins that make it approachable earlier than many Bordeaux of this quality. The 2019 vintage was a strong one across the Left Bank, and the half bottle is a neat way to try it.
Serve with: grilled ribeye, braised lamb, hearty stews, roasted vegetables or aged Gouda.
