      The Wine

In 1978 Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Bordeaux and Robert Mondavi of Napa Valley joined forces to create Opus One — a wine that would marry classic Bordeaux structure with California’s climate and fruit. It remains one of the most recognised names in New World wine, and the model many others followed.

The 2012 is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and a little Malbec, aged 18 months in French oak. The nose shows both parents: cassis, blackberry and black cherry in the Left Bank mould, with forest floor, graphite and toasty oak behind. The palate is full-bodied and structured, its fine-grained tannins softened over a decade in bottle, finishing long and persistent.

      How big is this bottle?

150cl — a 1.5 litre magnum, equal to two standard bottles.

Is a 2012 ready to drink?

Yes. Over a decade in bottle has softened the tannins, and it is drinking well now with a decant.

How long should I decant it?

An hour to ninety minutes, poured carefully in case of light sediment, served at 16–18°C.
