Château La Garde 2019 — black cherry, cedar and tobacco from one of Pessac-Léognan’s most dependable estates.
La Garde comes from Pessac-Léognan, the gravel-soil heartland just south of the city of Bordeaux and the appellation that gave the region its first great red wines. The 2019 is a classic Left Bank blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, aged in French oak barrels.
It is full-bodied and generously fruited — ripe blackberry and cherry threaded with spice and a measured touch of oak — but the structure is what marks it out. Refined tannins and vibrant acidity carry the wine through a long finish, and give it the frame to keep developing in bottle.
Serve with: grilled ribeye, braised lamb shank, hearty stews, roasted vegetable and mushroom dishes, or aged Gouda.
