      The Wine

Château Montrose was established in 1815 and has spent two centuries building a reputation as one of the Médoc’s most serious estates. Its Saint-Estèphe vineyards, close to the Gironde, produce reds of famous structure and longevity. The 2019 blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged 18 to 24 months in French oak.

In the glass it opens with intense dark berry and cassis, threaded with violets, graphite and freshly turned earth, then vanilla, licorice and roasted coffee. The palate is full-bodied and layered — blackberry, blackcurrant and plum with tobacco, cedar and dark chocolate — carried on finely grained tannins and bright acidity to a long, earthy, spice-edged finish. In Jeroboam it ages more slowly still, which makes this a bottle for a milestone rather than a Tuesday.

      Questions

How much wine is a Jeroboam?

Three litres — the equivalent of four standard bottles, enough for around twenty-four glasses.

      Why choose a large format?

Less air relative to wine means slower, more even ageing, so large formats are prized for long cellaring — and they make a real centrepiece.

      Drink now or keep?

Keep. The 2019 has decades ahead; if opening young, decant for several hours.
