Chassagne-Montrachet by Joseph Drouhin, 2018 — acacia, lemon curd and hazelnut in a perfectly sized half bottle.
Joseph Drouhin, established in 1880, is one of Burgundy’s great family houses, and its Chassagne-Montrachet shows the village’s hallmark polish. The grapes are hand-harvested and vinified traditionally, with the 2018 aged in oak barrels.
Expect white flowers — acacia and honeysuckle — with lemon and grapefruit zest on the nose, then a creamy, luxurious palate of ripe orchard fruit, lemon curd and vanilla, threaded with the stony minerality that sets Chassagne apart. Crisp acidity keeps it graceful, and the half bottle means fine white Burgundy for two glasses, no waste.
Serve with: poached fish, shellfish, roast chicken in lemon or butter sauce, creamy pasta, or grilled fish.
