      The Wine

Château Léoville Las Cases sits at the northern edge of Saint-Julien, its vineyards running right up to the Pauillac boundary and down towards the Gironde estuary. The estate has been making wine since the seventeenth century and is one of the most closely watched properties in all of Bordeaux.

The 2019 is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, aged in oak barrels. It is a serious, structured wine: black fruit at the core, graphite and cedar running through it, and firm tannins that give it a very long life ahead. Full-bodied, silky in texture despite the structure, and built to be cellared.

      Questions

Should I drink it now or cellar it?

It can be opened now with a long decant, but this is a wine built for the cellar — the tannins will soften and the aromatics deepen over many years.

How long should I decant it?

At least two hours if drinking young. A young wine of this structure needs plenty of air.

What temperature should I serve it at?

16–18°C. Cool room temperature keeps the aromatics precise.
