Château Haut-Brion 1998 — the only First Growth outside the Médoc, at its mature best.
Château Haut-Brion has been making wine in Pessac-Léognan since the sixteenth century, and holds a singular place in Bordeaux: it is the only Premier Grand Cru Classé named in the 1855 classification from outside the Médoc. Its history and the region’s are effectively the same story.
The 1998 blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged 18 to 22 months in French oak. Now well past twenty-five years old, it is full-bodied and rich yet remarkably refined: blackcurrant and blackberry threaded with cedar, tobacco and earth, with violet and gentle spice emerging as it opens. Velvety tannins are fully integrated with the fruit, and the finish is long and complex.
Serve with: roast duck with black cherries, filet mignon with foie gras, grilled lamb, venison, or aged cheeses.
